Getting your new puppy home is like bringing home a new born child. The little thing is unfamiliar with the surroundings, a little scared, a little curious and also young and innocent. You have just brought it away from its familiar surrounding and hence you need to care for it with patience, understanding and love.Training your new puppy is a step that should begin from Day One, from the moment you get it home. Do remember that your puppy will take some time to adjust to the training process. We bring to you a few basic tips that will help you train the new member in your family.Toilet training – It is the most important part of training a puppy and often the one that worries people the most.
- Set a schedule: You can start by setting a pattern wherein you feed the puppy and then take him outside within 15 to 20 minutes so he can relieve himself.
- Create space: You need to keep a designated place for the puppy to relieve itself. Dogs like to pee where they have peed before. You could try using a cloth to soak up your puppy’s pee and the next time you take it out again, bring the soiled cloth and put it in the same spot. The dog will sniff the cloth and immediately wet it again. This trick can be used for the initial days till the puppy is accustomed to the place.
- Observe signs: Watch for signs of urination/defecation like turning around in circles, whining, digging the ground and the likes and immediately take him out.
