The Felinae subfamily covers a wide range of cats, from your domestic cat (Felis catus) to wild species like cheetahs, lynxes, caracals, servals, ocelots, and jungle cats. These cats typically purr instead of roar, and most are solitary hunters. 

They’re highly adaptable, living in habitats that range from dense forests to arid deserts. Domestic cats fall within this group, sharing many behavioural and anatomical traits with their wild relatives.

• Acinonychinae - The Cheetah Lineage (Historic Classification)

Historically, the cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) was placed in its own subfamily, Acinonychinae, due to its distinct evolutionary traits like unmatched speed, long legs, and semi-retractable claws. 

However, modern genetic studies have reclassified cheetahs within Felinae, as they share closer genetic ties with smaller cats than with the roaring big cats.
