Golden Retrievers were originally bred in the Scottish Highlands as working dogs.
They accompanied hunters on their expeditions and were trained to find and gently carry back shot game
like water fowl to their masters. An important part of their job was to bring back fowl without damaging them.
Besides being very intelligent, Retrievers are playful and generally approach life with a happy attitude.
This is what makes them very popular as family dogs. Retrievers are also in plenty of demand for several
occupations – they are trained as guide dogs, for search-and-rescue operations and emotional support dogs.

ANATOMY
FOOD FOR YOUR
GOLDEN RETRIEVER
Giving your pet appropriate nutrition at different stages of their lives is very important to help them
grow well and stay healthy. Pups who are younger than three and a half months old can be fed puppy starter
food from Royal Canin or Arden Grange. Pups who have crossed this age can be given puppy food from Acana,
Taste of the Wild or Farmina. Each of these brands offers food with different protein types. Royal Canin
also has some popular options.
As your pet enters the adulthood, his or her nutritional needs will change. Choose dog food depending on your pet’s
breed, Acana has high protein food for large breeds. Taste of the Wild and Farmina also have options that you can
choose from for your Retriever. The grain-free lamb and blueberry variety is popular. There is also a codfish and
orange variant.

PLAY
wITH YOUR Golden Retriever
As a working dog breed, Retrievers need a good amount of both mental and physical stimulation to stay happy.
Rope toys
and the KONG tug toy
are excellent for physical games. If you’ve noticed that your dog likes to chew,
do take a look at the
Twistee collection.
Dogs who don’t receive enough mental stimulation can get bored and resort to naughty or destructive behaviour.
HUFT Snuffle mats,
Nina Ottosson doggy puzzles,
KONG interactive toys encourage dogs to use their senses and
their minds. Mental stimulation doesn’t always need a toy, you can even create your own ‘treasure hunt’ by
hiding treats around a room and letting your pet sniff them out.
Teaching your pet a trick also counts as
mental stimulation. Watch your dog to see which type of
activities your pet enjoys. The best toys for Golden Retrievers include an assortment of different varieties.
GROOM your Golden Retriever
Golden Retrievers have a characteristically beautiful coat in shades of warm gold. Routine grooming ensures that your dog’s coat
stays beautiful and healthy through the year. Use a
HUFT Self-Cleaning Slicker brush
to capture shed fur and the HUFT Double
Sided Steel Comb for a basic brushing at home.
A Zoom Groom is a great way to dislodge shed fur during baths or use gentle on a dry coat to massage your pet. Dogs enjoy massages
(so you can score major brownie points with your pooch) and it also encourages blood circulation which contributes to the health
of the coat. A pet glove can also be used for this.
In terms of dog shampoo for Golden Retrievers, the
HUFT Deep Cleansing shampoo and
the Isle of Dogs Silky Coating shampoo are excellent
for baths, you should also have a couple of good quality microfibre towels to dry the coat well. A damp coat can prompt a host of skin
issues. The
HUFT French Vanilla Perfume is a lovely way to end the groom.
Your Retriever’s silky coat will do a good job of hiding ticks and fleas so be sure to check for them every day. Before your pet goes
out for a walk or to play, we recommend using
the HUFT Tick & Flea Repellent
to discourage bugs from latching on. Putting in place
a year-round holistic & natural tick and flea prevention plan is preferred. Some useful products for this includes
Natural Diatomaceous
Earth Powder,
HUFT Tick & Flea shampoo
and
the HUFT Paw balm among others. We have a more comprehensive guide as well.
