Huskies are a working breed from extremely cold climates so their physical and
personality traits are designed to suit these conditions and lifestyle. For instance, besides their
double coat of fur, a husky’s ears are much furrier than those of other breeds to form a protective
barrier against icy cold winds. And their fluffy tails are long enough to protect their faces when
they curl up to sleep.
If you choose to bring a husky home, developing a lifestyle and routines to help your husky adapt to warmer
climates should be a life-long commitment.
Huskies are used to a pack life and can adjust well to living as part of a family.
They have been known to be friendly and social with other dogs but have strong hunting instincts and tend
to chase smaller animals, especially if they run. Families with huskies should be prepared to meet the
needs of a highly energetic, playful and curious companion. Here we have a few essentials to include
in your Husky supplies shopping list.

ANATOMY
FOOD FOR YOUR HUSKY
For husky pups we recommend puppy food from
Orijen,
Farmina
or
Taste of the Wild
. Pups who have just been weaned
and are starting to eat dry food (younger than three and a half months of age) can begin with puppy starter foods
from
Arden Grange or
Royal Canin. To make it easier to eat, we suggest soaking the kibble in water to soften it.
Adult huskies have different nutritional requirements which are met by options from
Taste of the Wild, Orijen and Farmina. Acana also has some popular varieties to choose from.

BOWLS FOR HUSKIES

Always have bowls of fresh water available for them.
PLAY
WITH YOUR HUSKY
As most working breeds are, huskies have a lot of energy and they also have strong hunting instincts.
Expect an active lifestyle with plenty of physical and mental exercise to keep your husky happy.
Rope toys
and strong fetch toys
are good additions to your pet’s toybox. Playtime is the best way
to bond with your pet so don’t miss out. At different lifestages, dogs need different forms of exercise
and play. To understand your pet better, speak to a certified canine behaviourist.
Exercise doesn’t always have to look like a run or a game of fetch, it can also be training,
a puzzle toy or a stroll with plenty of time to stop and smell interesting scent. Nina Ottosson’s
puzzles and
KONG interactive toys are adept at keeping your husky engaged, these toys exercise their
minds and sense of smell.
Licki Mats and
snuffle mats are also a good option for indoor mental
stimulation activities.
Thanks to their build and coats, Huskies need to be watched closely for overheating and dehydration.
Especially when you’re out on a long walk, a hike or spending time at the dog park. Opt to keep them indoors,
in a cool environment during the warmest parts of the day. Use toys or create games to prompt mental stimulation.
This helps them stay calm.
GROOM YOUR HUSKY
Daily grooming will be necessary and it’s best if you start getting them used to being
handled from a young age.
Investing is the right husky grooming tools will be worth it. The best dog brush for Siberian husky is
a
slicker brush. However,
a rake brush and comb will come in handy for their routine brushing at home.
Huskies have a double coat, the undercoat is short and thick to help them keep warm. This is shed in the warmer
seasons. The outer coat of longer fur is what prevents snow from sticking to them. In warmer weather huskies
tend to shed more.
The HUFT Deep Cleansing Shampoo
works well for baths. Consider giving your pet a relaxing massage before
their baths with the
HUFT Massage Oil. This not only scores you major brownie points with your dog but
also encourages blood circulation which contributes to the overall health of the coat.
