Is chapati good for dogs? It is one of the common questions in every Indian household!
Once our furry friends are welcomed into the family, our parents or even we individually end up feeding them exactly what we eat. The typical saying “ghee and chapatis are good for health” is recycled and our loving pets are ironic victims of allergies and gastrointestinal issues.
My dogs for one are amped up on chapati, curd, ghee and heavy paranthas because my mother’s love language works in the form of giving us good fatty foods.
Yet whenever their stomachs grumble and their pooping cycles were observed because of said tummy aches, I finally decided I would do proper research and try to figure whether fatty foods are good for our dogs.
Can dogs eat chapati? Here's everything we need to know:
We understand this topic may be difficult to digest as wheat is such an integral part of our lives! However, I personally dislike waking up to my Indie Luna gagging and vomiting her food out especially when the reason is completely unknown to me.
As pet parents, knowing their allergies and food related preferences can be so helpful.
The good thing about wheat is that it is so rich in protein and nutrients, it gives great support to your pet’s physical growth. However, since dogs are mostly carnivores, we must consider how much plant protein should be accessible to them. Dogs and cats are facultative and obligate carnivores, meaning that meat protein and fats are their primary source of energy and growth. It is not the main component of their diet, but it is still vital to eat the proper amounts of vegetables, fruits, and grains. Additionally, wheat contains a lot of carbs, which are regarded as empty calories and might lead to obesity and other problems in later life.
Ghee can act as a superfood as long as it is given in moderation. As we have been told time and again by our stringent Indian parents, ghee helps build strong bones and ensures that the hips and joints are well lubricated. It is rich in Vitamin A and helps improve your pup’s brain health and cognitive functions. But it is important to note that dogs with pancreatitis or any other condition where the pet needs to be on a low-fat diet, should not be fed ghee.
Gluten Allergies - Every dog has a different reaction to food and gluten allergies are one form of them! Just as how our stomachs would swell up if gluten isn’t accepted by the body, the same happens with some dogs. Gluten can cause reactions in forms of consistent itching, bloating, ear infections and wax.
Some breeds of dogs are more susceptible to these allergies. According to a recent study, out of 30 breeds, 14 were gluten intolerant.
Wheat and gluten can easily be fed to your dogs in moderation as well. Observing how your dog reacts to chapatis is most important! If they are able to digest it well, they can be fed chapatis in a certain manner and can be avoided every day to prevent reactions.
If your furry friend is not taking to the wheat diet well, don't worry! A good meal consisting of raw chicken, fruits and different vegetables can easily fulfill their dietary needs.
Fun fact! Jowar roti is a good alternative as well. It is healthier for your dog and will satiate their hunger leaving them with all the energy to be naughty and fulfill his or her pupper goals!
But again, as a treat, once in a while if the dog is not allergic to gluten, chapatis are fine, but it should not be fed to your dog on a regular basis. Same goes with Jowar roti. Dogs require high quality proteins which play an important part in the formation and maintenance of cartilage, tendons, and ligaments.
Yes, Shih Tzus can eat chapati in moderation, but it should not be a staple as dogs need more protein than carbs.
Can wheat upset a dog's stomach? Wheat is generally safe for most dogs, but some may have allergies or sensitivities to it. So, always consult a vet for more details, and observe your dog’s eating habits, food they digest, and prefer.
Atta flour is safe in small amounts, but it should not replace nutrient-rich, protein-based food in your dog’s diet.
