For this to happen, both the ingredients chosen and the way they’re cooked matter. But with conventional kibble, it’s not always clear where the ingredients are sourced from or how each ingredient contributes to your pet’s health.

When we decided to make Hearty dog food, we wanted to innovate the process completely. So we’re transparent about how we make this oven-baked kibble from start to finish. The recipes used are made by canine nutritionists so each meal is balanced and nourishing.

What Does a ‘Balanced’ Meal for Dogs Mean?

In other words, what are the nutrients that your dog needs to stay healthy during adulthood?

• Protein: Protein and its amino acids are a key component of your dog’s diet. Since their bodies are unable to produce some essential amino acids, these need to be added to their diet. For dogs, protein from meat sources, especially high-quality cuts that include muscle, is ideal.
• Carbs and Fats: Carbs and fats are fuel for your pet and are another important part of a balanced diet. It is commonly believed that these components lead to weight gain. In reality, carbs and healthy fats need to be adjusted to your pet’s activity levels. If they get more fuel than they need, dogs tend to put on weight. But both are essential parts of a balanced diet for dogs.
• Vitamins and Minerals: Vitamins and minerals derived from fresh fruit and vegetables contribute to the body’s growth and maintenance.
• Fibre: Fibre is essential for a well-functioning gastrointestinal system. It is important for the colon and gut microbes.

What Goes into Hearty Oven-Baked Dog Food by HUFT?

A complete meal made with canine nutritionists: With Hearty, we wanted to make sure that every bowlful was a meal that was complete in itself. So, with the help of canine nutritionists, we put together a recipe that contains the right mix of meat, veggies, fruit, and grains. This combination gives your dog optimal protein, fibre, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to fuel their activities, and support a healthy coat and a strong immune system.

High proportion of protein: Canines do better when they have more protein in their diet. This is why 60% of this meal is real animal protein. Protein in your pet’s diet contributes to everything from bone and muscle strength to immunity and brain development. We brought in custom-designed machines that can cook fresh meat because regular kibble machines are not designed to. Conventional machines for kibble can only use already processed meat that is first converted into a powder.

Indian ‘super’ herbs: Drawing from the rich nutritional knowledge of our Indian kitchens, we’ve added herbs (that are backed by science) like ashwagandha and turmeric for their healing properties. Moringa offers anti-inflammatory properties for your dog’s benefit.

Oven-baked and extrusion-free food: Even the best ingredients in dog food can provide zero nutrition if they’re processed instead of cooked. Regular kibble is made with a process called ‘extrusion’ that uses high heat and kills the nutrients in the ingredients. But with Hearty, we’ve chosen to oven-bake the ingredients at much gentler (3x lower) temperatures. This way, your pet receives all the nutrition possible from each ingredient. Cold-processed food is easier to digest so even dogs that are prone to bloating are more comfortable with Hearty.

What Doesn’t Go into a Hearty Meal?

If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck it must be a duck, right? Not in this case! Hearty may seem like regular kibble but it’s actually far from it. Here’s why:

• No ingredients that are by-products: Ingredients used to make Hearty are human-grade and sourced solely for the purpose of making good, healthy meals for your dog. Whether it’s meat or veggies, they aren’t by-products or scraps. These ingredients are handled with the same level of care as ingredients that are fit for human consumption.
• No Corn or Soy: Regular kibble often contains ‘filler ingredients’ like corn and soy that make the recipe more economical. All the ingredients in Hearty are carefully chosen to serve a purpose and there aren’t any ‘filler’ ingredients.
• GMO-Free: We made the decision to use ingredients that are non-GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms) so our process is gentler on the planet.
• No added coating for flavour: Regular kibble can often have flavour enhancers coated on the food to tempt dogs. However, Hearty has none of this. The flavours are from the ingredients themselves. The high meat content makes this inherently more palatable to your dog and has been known to tempt even the fussiest eaters.
