Pugs are an ancient breed that were once companion dogs to emperors in ancient China.
These toy dogs have been associated with royalty in Europe as well. Pug personalities
are often described as ‘multum in parvo’ which means ‘a lot in a little.’
To an outsider, a pug’s default expression is worry. However, a pug parent will be able to
tell you that pugs display a variety of expressions. They are curious about new sounds and
smells, highly alert, snuggly, loving and, often, clownish. Pugs are companion animals and
spend their long lives (11-13 years) forming a strong bond with their humans. Don’t be fooled
by their docile exterior, when provoked, these toy dogs will not hesitate to defend their
territory, snack or human with everything they’ve got.

Healthy & Nutritious Treats
Pugs like treats that are easy for them to chew and handle. Twistix, Dogaholic and
Calcium bones are all popular options because of they are appropriately sized.
This breed is prone to obesity to make sure you put them on a healthy, nutritious diet and
don’t overdo the treats! Pugs are brachycephalic (short-snouted) and those that are heavier
than their ideal weight have a harder time breathing comfortably.

Happi Doggy Vegetarian Dental Chew
Pugs often have double teeth (or two teeth seated very close together)
where bits of food get stuck. So dental aids and a routine are very important.
Gnawing at Happi Doggy chews help to scrape off plaque and tartar from their teeth.
If your pet’s breath smells it generally means you need to clean their teeth,
sometimes it could be due to an underlying health issue, take your pet to the vet to check.

BOWLS FOR PUGS
Slant bowls are easier to eat meals out of than regular flat bowls.
This is because of the flat snouts that pugs have.

PLAY
WITH YOUR PUG
Pugs are smart dogs so between snoozes they do enjoy mental
stimulation and light physical activity. A
snuffle mat is a great way to keep your
pet occupied indoors. Pugs are also fond of playing
tug and fetch. However,
since they are prone to hip dysplasia, it’s advisable that running and fetching
games are played on rough, outdoor surfaces so they don’t slip and slide as much.
Plush toys that are small sized and make squeaks or crinkly noises
tend to get more attention from pugs. Short play sessions are better as they get out of
breath pretty quickly due to their flat snouts.
GROOM YOUR PUG
Pugs have really short coats but they shed as the seasons change through the year. So we recommend
regular brushing and
a HUFT Deshedder with rake
to capture loose fur from the coat. Between baths,
a spritz of the
Isle of Dogs Replascent Odour neutralising spray
keeps the coat smelling fresh.
Pugs have large, round eyes that are excellent for the puppy dog look when begging for food.
However, these soulful eyes tend to water often and tear stains around the eyes and cheeks are
not uncommon. A product like
the TropiClean SPA Lavish tear stain remover
will come in handy.
Their snub, alert noses often dry out and may be crusty – this is nothing a little dab of
snout balm
can’t fix. A pug’s face folds require special attention as moisture and dirt get trapped
between them. Use
gentle face wipes
to clean them out routinely. Ensure that the fur and skin
between the folds are kept clean, dry and soft.
Your pug’s soft, velvety folded ears can need to be cleaned out regularly with wipes like the
Skout’s Honor Probiotic Ear Cleaner
to keep infections at bay.
